# How to Check Novel Continuity with AI

A continuity check asks whether the reader can reconcile the facts of your story. AI can help locate possible conflicts, but it can also invent a problem or miss one. Ask for evidence and review a manageable set of chapters at a time instead of requesting a blanket assurance that your novel is consistent.

## 1. Make a small record of established facts

Start with facts the reader has actually been given. Record the fact, the chapter where it appears, and whether it can change. Separate established facts from plans for later chapters. A character can lie, an object can move, and a belief can be wrong; the record should preserve that distinction.

For our fictional harbor mystery, the record might say: in chapter two, Mara gives the archive key to Ivo; in chapter three, she learns the west stair is flooded; at the end of chapter four, only Ivo knows the gate was opened deliberately. Each entry has a source and a point in the timeline.

Track character knowledge separately from what the author knows. A correct fact can still cause a continuity problem if a viewpoint character refers to it before learning it.

## 2. Request a narrow audit with quoted evidence

Run separate passes for timeline, object possession, and character knowledge. Narrow questions make the findings easier to verify. Provide the relevant passages when needed rather than assuming every detail of a long manuscript is available in the current request.

The prompt below explicitly permits uncertainty. A useful response may say “the transfer is not shown in these excerpts” rather than claiming the event never happened anywhere in the book.

Check these excerpts against the established facts below. Focus only on object possession and character knowledge. For each possible conflict, quote both relevant passages, identify their chapter labels, explain the conflict, and suggest the smallest possible repair. Separate confirmed contradictions from missing transitions and deliberate mysteries. If evidence is unavailable, say so; do not invent quotations or chapter references. Do not rewrite the excerpts.

## 3. Repair the cause, not just the sentence

Worked example: chapter two says, “Mara pressed the only archive key into Ivo’s hand.” Chapter five says, “Alone at the archive, Mara unlocked the door.” The missing return of the key may be an omitted transition, rather than a reason to rewrite the entire chapter.

One repair is to show Ivo returning it before Mara leaves. Another is to make the locked door a new obstacle. Creating a spare key would also resolve the immediate problem, but it changes the earlier claim that there is only one key and may weaken a later plot point. Choose the repair that preserves the intended stakes.

Now check the consequence. If Ivo returns the key earlier, can he still enter the archive in the scene where he needs to? A repair can move a contradiction rather than remove it. Keep a short list of affected scenes and reread them together.

## 4. Keep the story bible aligned with the manuscript

When you intentionally change a rule, update the story bible as well as the prose. Avoid keeping both “the west stair is permanently sealed” and “Mara uses the west stair daily” as current facts unless the timeline explains the difference.

Finish with a human read through the revised sequence. Check travel time, who was present, who heard the revelation, and where important objects ended up. The aim is a story the reader can follow, not simply an empty list of AI warnings.
